The major mapping standards available today are all quite good. Although the chart makers constantly battle for supremacy, the consumer often doesn’t see a significant difference between the coverage. One new trend is the push to sell units with built-in mapping for the entire United States. The argument is that consumer wants to simplify the purchase and not be “forced” into additional expenditures, but the reality seems to be that the large retailer wants to simplify the sale. The big question for the customer will be “how easy is it to update the built-in cartography in my plotter”. While cruising boaters who cover a large area may benefit, the average boater requiring a single chart chip is probably better off to take the traditional route.
